No Genetic Modification Required to Improve Tea Plants

Russian scientists work for making tea plants more resistant to drought and definitely have some success.

Tea plants love water and evaporate it quite actively. Russia has the only site, suitable for growing tea – the Black sea coast, Krasnodar region; however, the climate there is hot and dry. Scientists recommend growing right kinds of tea plants.

Scientists spent over 10 years comparing various kinds of tea plants and found the one, which survived dry times best of all - it is the “Kartum” sort.

New Approach to Earthquake Prediction Suggested

Scientists from Russian region of Kamchatka suggested a new approach to long-range prediction of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Since Kamchatka is one of the regions, where most intensive earthquakes on our planet take place quite often, we should listen to them.

Kamchatka often suffers great earthquakes, reaching 9.0 on the Richter scale. Local seismologists and volcanologists perform online monitoring of seismic activity in the region. Scientists suggest four new techniques for long-range prediction of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, which are suitable for particular regions and volcanoes, as well as for the whole Earth.

Ionizing Radiation Extends Life

Low radiation doses extend human life, Russian biologist says. Ionizing radiation affects genes, which are responsible for cell ageing.

Billions of cells are exposed to natural ionizing radiation. Evolution should have created an effective means for protecting cells from small radiation doses. Thus, the fact that X-rays and gamma rays in low and medium doses extend life of various laboratory animals on 10-29% is not surprising.

Small doses of radiation promote immunity and cell division, as well as initiate other mechanisms of cell defense. But another explanation exists.

Mining Deep in the Ocean

Ocean is a well-known potential source of mineral resources, and we should be careful, while mining, in order not to pollute one of the most important natural objects on our planet. Russian scientists suggest environment friendly and not very expensive technology for mining deep in the ocean.

Ores usually contain iron and manganese in the form of hydroxides. Manganese hydroxide adsorbs metal salts from water. Russian researchers showed that acid environment with reducing agent (perhydrol, for instance) promoted fast reduction of iron and manganese hydroxides with further release of metal manganese, iron and other metal additions. The idea is performing metal reduction deep in the ocean via special underwater reactor.

New Horizons of Thermodiagnostics

Any one, who took a walk in a summer forest and was nearly eaten by thousands of angry and hungry mosquitoes, thought about a wonderful ability of these insects to find “fresh warm lunch”, in other words, objects, which are warmer than their environment. Mosquitoes are genial nature’s creation – unique natural thermal sensors, which cost evolution millions of years. Well, it took Russian scientists much less time to develop new thermally sensitive elements – Z-thermistors, which are perfect for temperature regulation, alarm devices for set temperatures and sensors for thermal diagnostics of oncological diseases.

The “heart” of Z-thermistor is the n-p semiconductor structure, silicone with small inclusions of atoms of other elements. Authors keep exact composition, technology and configuration of z-thermistor a secret, despite they have patented their development in Russia, Europe, China and America. Mentioned n-p structure reacts of temperature changes by shifting from one stable state with low current to another stable state with very high current. The temperature, which causes transition of the structure, is easily determined – all you have to do is changing element’s supply voltage. That is why thermistors are also called “readjusted alarm devices for set temperatures” – this means changing supply voltage leads to change in temperature, which causes abrupt current step, which can be detected easily, since its amplitude is quite significant even without gain – up to 80 of feed voltage. And one more thing – no additional devices for gaining output signal are required.

Cobalt and Nanodiamonds – Shaken, not Stirred

A think-tank of Russian physicists currently develops production conditions for a new composite material with diamond matrix and prepares to investigate its properties. Said material is a result of baking of nanodiamonds with cobalt under conditions of high pressure and high temperature.

Microcrystalline diamond powder is a common material for providing various processing tools with diamond coating, however, scientists also suggest using nanodiamonds, produced by means of so-called “detonation technique”, for this purpose. Hardness of mentioned nanodiamonds is nearly the same that natural diamond monocrystals have. Diamond coating is generated by simple baking of nanoparticles, but special coatings (a hyperfine film with appropriate mechanical properties, for instance) often require an activating additive. Researchers claim cobalt, commonly used in production of two-layered diamond carbide blades, is great as an activating additive.

Nanodiamonds are polycrystalline particles, which size does not exceed twenty nanometers. Physicists placed said particles together with cobalt into a high pressure chamber, and when pressure reached 8 GPa, reagents were steadily heated, until thermometers showed 1700-1800 degrees Kelvin – this temperature caused cobalt to melt and enter diamonds, filling empty spaces in crystals. Key reagent for the experiment was following: polycrystalline nanodiamond powder with diameter of aggregates (polycrystals) about 3-4 microns, and crystallites (microcrystals) in these aggregates were as little as 10-20 nanometers. Baking time was very short and never exceeded 10 seconds. Reagent ratio was adjusted in order to prevent diamond powder from full saturation with cobalt.

Lack of Oxygen Harms Teeth

Russian engineers now know why metal-and-ceramic tooth crowns tend to decay very rapidly.

Metal-and-ceramic crowns consist of metal base and porcelain coating, anchored to base during the process of baking. Sometimes porcelain covers only exterior of a crown, thus exposing its inner part to mouth environment, not to forget about contacts with metal pin, which often fixes a crown.

Researchers studied 9 alloys, common for prosthetic procedure – alloys of cobalt, titanium and gold were placed into artificial saliva under temperature and pH changes. Results showed that oxygen had strongest effect on corrosion resistance of said alloys – lack of oxygen, to be more exact.
