Lack of Oxygen Harms Teeth


Russian engineers now know why metal-and-ceramic tooth crowns tend to decay very rapidly.

Metal-and-ceramic crowns consist of metal base and porcelain coating, anchored to base during the process of baking. Sometimes porcelain covers only exterior of a crown, thus exposing its inner part to mouth environment, not to forget about contacts with metal pin, which often fixes a crown.

Researchers studied 9 alloys, common for prosthetic procedure – alloys of cobalt, titanium and gold were placed into artificial saliva under temperature and pH changes. Results showed that oxygen had strongest effect on corrosion resistance of said alloys – lack of oxygen, to be more exact.
