Mining Deep in the Ocean

Ocean is a well-known potential source of mineral resources, and we should be careful, while mining, in order not to pollute one of the most important natural objects on our planet. Russian scientists suggest environment friendly and not very expensive technology for mining deep in the ocean.

Ores usually contain iron and manganese in the form of hydroxides. Manganese hydroxide adsorbs metal salts from water. Russian researchers showed that acid environment with reducing agent (perhydrol, for instance) promoted fast reduction of iron and manganese hydroxides with further release of metal manganese, iron and other metal additions. The idea is performing metal reduction deep in the ocean via special underwater reactor.
